Maybe sounds silly, but when I last did this, I posted cash "International
Signed-for" (or sumsuch phrase). No probs at all - tho the risk is yours.
Worked a treat, and cost very little.
To reduce your exposure, you could "Invite" the hotel to accept a smaller
deposit - say 100 Euros - and being Italian, they should understand the
issues.
