World's changed quite a lot in 20 years but this is Europe so hardly a
million miles away.
Personally I never purchase money up front in the UK in either cash or
traveller cheque form - UK banks always screw you either way for the
"privilege".
My recommendation, get a Nationwide debit and/or credit card. You can
pull money from ATMs with the debit card with no advance or conversion
fees. Credit card is handy for non-cash transactions. No fees for
overseas use either.
