We're remodeling and we are finding lots of plain foil wrapped around
all the PVC pipe and in some of the walls.
It's not there for insulation -- it's primarily on vent pipes and even
some drain pipes (from the sink to the floor). House was built in
1980.
We also found the bathrooms to have sunken floors by 1.5" (2x4 width)
and filled in below the tile floors to make it level. Remodeler said
they used to do this in areas where they would tile. The softer cement
fill would keep the tile from cracking if the foundation cracked.
We're mostly curious about the foil. It's not around any metal/copper
pipes.
