INSURERS ARE HOLDING MEETING TO PLAN FOR A WORSENING OF THE DROUGHT

KIRRIN MCKECHNIE: Hello and welcome to the Queensland edition of Stateline.
I'm Kirrin McKechnie. First tonight. The weather phenomenon which terrifies
many in the bush. And may be upon us once again. For the third time in as
many decades.

El Nino - the irregular pacific ocean weather event which means drought for
Queensland - appears to be developing once more. And it could compound our
already parched conditions.

The Queensland farmers federation held a special forum in Brisbane today to
discuss the drought. And it's pretty clear they're of the opinion the big
dry we're in now may be evolving into a permanent feature.

GARY SANSOM, QUEENSLAND FARMERS' FEDERATION PRESIDENT: Unfortunately we may
need to recognise that some of the weather patterns that we're seeing at the
moment which we may have classified as drought in the past may just be part
of our normal climate that we may experience in some areas in the future so
it's going to be a challenge in how we deal with those.

SID PLANT, DARLING DOWNS FARMER: Farmers are saying things like the seasons
have gone crazy and when are we going to get back to normal seasons but I'm,
I think that we're managing in what is now normal, normal change so we're
managing in climate change to a certain extent. I've had 438 millimetres in
the last twelve months and my normal average is 650 so that's a big change
so if we want to continue to be farmers we have to be able to deal with
that.
