As the other poster mentioned, roller shades are a good, inexpensive,
easy to install option. However, room-darkening drapes are just as good
(but probably more expensive) in terms of allowing light through the
actual material, and probably superior in terms of not allowing light to
seep out around the edges. Good drapes, new, can be expensive, but you
can often find them at thrift stores if you're not picky about style.
My husband sometimes works nights and needs to sleep during the day.
We've got 2" faux wood "room darkening" blinds, but there's a lot of
light that seeps in between the slats and around the edges (they are
also inside mount). It is dim, but not dark, esp. when the sun is
directly on the windows.
