Why not consider one of those photo sensor switches that are very
inexpensive (around $10) and very reliable.  They will turn on your
lamp-post light at dusk and off at dawn.  Installation is also simple.
Also consider using a compact fluorescent bulb...my Sylvania bulbs last a
year.
