Not sure I understand about the backer or the migration.  If you have
tile coming down the wall, and your floor is tiled as well, water could
get in the corner where they meet.  A properly grouted joint, with the
grout sealed, should prevent trouble.  I don't know if there's
something else that should be added to the equation.  If the grout is
not sealed you'll have more trouble with water standing on the floor
seeping through.

Oh for the days of the mud job, when all the tile was set into a 2"
thick layer of cement.  You could drive a car across a tile floor built
that way.
