His original is 26x40, addition 16x40 so it is less than 1/2 the size
of the original.  There are many additions done that greatly increase
the square footage of a house and they all (unless really unusual) cost
less than demolition and rebuild of a new house.  Been there, done
that, neighbor (2) been there done that, etc.  I even have an
acquaintance that added a 2300 sq ft addition to a small house.  I
don't know what the original was but it was nowhere near 2300.
