This is just a WAG, but I would guess that Amana discovered that the
original door panel/shelf combination was poorly designed. I.e. it
would break. The redesigned both to eliminate the problem, and you just
had the bad luck that it didn't break earlier while the warantee was
still in force.
Why don't you invest $0.37 in a letter to the president of Amana/Maytag
asking if this was the case and asking for an extension of the warantee
if so. The worst that can happen is they say no.
