We did that with our Jenn-Air downdraft cooktop that's in an island. The
duct goes to the basement and then along the basement joists and out. Just
keep the exhaust fan limitations in mind, and remember that elbows add some
amount of footage to the total length. I forget the factor; maybe as much
as 5' or so for every 90 degree elbow.
(Your fan installation materials should explain how to calculate how much
duct you can push through.)
