How does buying the biggest house ever minimize costs?
Typical realtor talk to get people to spend the max. They hope that
people will feel better about spending that amount when the house is
bigger, since first time buyers are disappointed in how small the
houses are that they could find in a more convenient area (if there
are any available in their price range at all).
People do get used to almost anything. One of our managers commutes
50 miles each way, and I think that's a lot (yeah, I know some people
go even farther). In comparison, it was a big change for us, going
from a condo in town one mile from work, to a house maybe 10 miles
away. We enjoy many things about our house, but here are lots of
times when we have felt the tradeoff of even the extra 10 miles.
I would not take on a maximum commute lightly, "just" to *still* spend
all that I could afford, if I was gonna be max'd out anyway, I'd at
least want some convenience for my $$$.
