In my last house (fortunately, the new one doesn't need it), I used to 
use a Simer Ace-in-the-Hole as a backup to my standard AC-powered sump 
pump.  It uses a car battery, which you have to buy separately. 

It definitely was not as powerful as the standard AC-powered sump pump, 
but, as you know, the kind of storm where you really need a sump pump 
will almost inevitably knock out electricity, as well. (Especially if 
you don't have a backup plan!)
