Where have you been? Lots of architect designed commercial, college,
and hi-end "loft" type building have beautiful exposed ductowrk, it is
part of the design, often "spiral duct" (no, the duct itself is
straight, the metal is formed in a spiral and there is a spiral seam.
Most any commercial HVAC outfit is used to dealing with spiral duct.

It depends on the "style" of your kitchen. If you had a flouncy
frilly traditional old fashioned calicoed country kitchen, well, you'd
probably need slipcovers for it. If you had a "modern" or
"commercial" style kitchen it would look right at home.
