In order, I would consider:
1) CD's (max of $100,000 per CD). These would be federally insured.
2) Money market mutual funds.
3) Bonds
4) dividend paying stocks

If you want to GROW the principle and collect income, the question
would be how much income vs how much growth, and do you expect the
income to need to grow over time?
Any answer given would involve mixing the 4 choices above. Each of the
4 choices adds risk to principle for any short period of time.
