I just bought my first house, in GA, recently.

what your realtor said is true...sort of. That is the customary
arrangement in GA. One attorny representing the lender, and the
realtors represent the parties in the transaction.

that said, I have serious doubts about an agent that tries to encourange
you not to be represented by counsel if you so desire. I can't tell
from your description just how discouraging he actually is being. But
if you want an attorney you should have one. And your representative
had best make accomodations to suit your needs, or he isn't the right
realtor for you. This is all just one person's opinion of course, I'm
sure some Realtors will read this and disagree, but I bet the
attorney's won't :).

I think that you will not have too much difficulty in locating an
attorney if you live in one of the major population centers. If you use
him primarily to review the contracts, it probably won't even be
particularly expensive.

good luck.
