The USA is said to have 8,143 tonnes of gold or about 262 million ounces. At
a current price of $410 per ounce that works out at $107,402,000,000 or
about $107 billion - well short of 3 trillion.

The other problem is that central banks lease or swap gold to private
organisations and each other, so 25% to 50% of the stuff may not even be
physically there.
