No, you are not being paranoid, you are being reasonably cautious. Some real
estate agents will also steer you in the direction of particular lawyers,
mortgage lenders, mortgage brokers, insurance agents, home inspectors, etc.,
as well as termite inspectors. How prevalent kickbacks may be, I do not
know, but surely it happens. This does not mean that every recommendation
from an agent is necessarily bad, but caution is a good idea. You probably
will save money if you do some research yourself on these various service
providers and possibly get a few opinions from different people before
accepting the first recommendation that comes from an agent.
