We're currently redoing the kitchen in a late-1950s rambler.

I've worked with drywall patching before, but some of the walls don't
seem to be traditional drywall. While checking under the sink to see
how difficult it will be to remove the countertop, I could see what
the rest of the wall was made of: The wallboard is brown with a
shiny/waxy finish. It looks like some kind of pressed composite, like
a cross between particle board and cardboard.

What is this stuff? What do I need to know to keep from damaging it?

Thanks!
