I'm just starting this with some similar situations with my wife's car 
accident - insurance didn't want to pay for a year and a half and some (the 
city, etc) wanted their money at the time the accident occurred.  You'll 
want to talk to the creditor and get them to agree if you pay the full 
amount they MUST remove the negative reporting off of all 3 credit reporting 
agencies, cease all collections, etc.  Get this in writing and with their 
signature..you may want to write it up yourself and send it to them for 
their signoff.  After receipt with their signature, you send them another 
letter referencing the check or money order (per our agreement, etc) with a 
restrictive endorsement on the back of the money order/check
