Yes, you can "transfer to an overdraft that doesn't exist" - Egg don't know
the balance of your bank account

However, you/your boyfriend may be making it more complex then it needs to
be.

Just tell the other card (0%) that you have a balance on Egg - and use them
to pay it off - the "balance" doesn't actually have to exist (like the bank
account, one card company doesn't know the balance of the other card) and
then transfer the money from the Egg Card (now in Credit) to your bank
account and stick it in a savings account for the 0% period

There is no need to actually spend the money...
