I hope this group can help me with a tax question. I'm a UK national and worked in the US for several years. I was granted stock options by the US company. I exercised some while I was in the US, and the remainder a few months after my return to the UK. The US tax people withheld a proportion of the profits from all these transactions. Which country should have been owed the remaining tax?

I declared the profits for all the transactions on my US tax return and not my UK one. Have I done the wrong thing, and if so, how much trouble have I bought myself? I was trying to do the right thing, but I'm worried that I may have screwed up by paying the remaining tax solely to the US.
