I believe he meant it is not necessary or required for an apartment
complex to obtain a social security number, likewise there are many
shelters and small apartment complexes that are owned by the landlord
and not a corporation, these people are usually more flexible and you
could probably hand carry your credit into their office rather than
paying them to have it ran, some might not even run credit if you're
willing to make a nice security deposit. The point is there is no law
requiring creditors, or real estate agents/landlords, to obtain a
social security number in order to run and/or extend credit or provide
a place to rent. There actually is a small handful of civil liberty
privacy advocates such as myself who have established credit without
providing a social security number. Landlords seem to forget that
there are people in this country on Visas that our ineligible for a
social security number but still need a place to live, these people
too can establish credit without a SSN. The only time you will need
to provide a Social Security Number in terms of credit would be if you
were applying for a mortgage loan because these loans are tax
deductable, but even then theoritically you could keep your Social off
of the loan account and only in the business records for tax time, of
course this is only in theory and very unlikely that any business
would be obliging. Still, as I have never applied for a mortgage loan
and I don't have any taxable credit, I have managed to get a platinum
visa card, a cellphone, and have had car loan offers made, and I have
not provided my social security number to any of these creditors. So
why do Rental Angencies seem to have some complex thinking that they
require my social security number when I don't even give it to the
bank! HA!
