It is a single sound only, and seems to be related to the switch
turning ON actually. I let the faucet run and watched the guage... It
was sitting around 50PSI, then after 60 seconds or so I heard a relay
in the switch click, then a few seconds later the loud noise, which
actually to me sounded like it might have come from the tank itself,
and the pressure guage shot up to 80PSI or so. After 10 seconds or so
I heard the switch relay click again and it shut off, but did so
without the loud noise. I did this test three times, same result
eachtime.

No, with the circuit breaker off the switch never activated, so the
noise never occurred. I assume had I let it go a few more minutes I
would have run the tank dry, but I didn't let it go that far for fear
of something bad happening.
